This is a new series I am working on 2019. Being a nanny part time I read a ton of picture books, but don't have a ton of things to always say about them. I decided it would be good to review them in chunks of 3 or 4 at a time. I will post about books I have read and my thoughts about twice a month. You can read more of this series here.
With Love, Little Red Hen
(Dear Peter Rabbit #3)
by
Hidden Forest has a new resident. Little Red Hen and her seven little chicks have moved into a cottage and plan to grow a bountiful crop of corn in the nearby field. The problem is that none of the Red Hen's neighbors are willing to help with the hard work. "Not I," says the dog, the goose, and the lazy cat. So Goldilocks, who has heard about the new arrivals from her friend Little Red Riding Hood, comes up with a neighborly idea: Why don't all the residents of Hidden Forest chip in and work on the garden? Better yet, why not make it a surprise? Of course, there are a couple of residents who might not be so cooperative. Will Wolfy Lupus and his cousin Fer O'Cious hatch a new plot of their own?
Following the highly acclaimed Dear Peter Rabbit and Yours Truly, Goldilocks, Alma Flor Ada, and Leslie Tryon offer young readers another peek into the world of their favorite storybook characters, revealed through the charming letters they write to one another.

MY THOUGHTS ON THE BOOK:
With Love, Little Red Hen is the most adorable picture book for children with incredible characters we all know and love. Featured in this book are characters such as Goldilocks, Peter Rabbit, Little Red Riding Hood, and the Bad Wolf, just to name a few. Which creates a fun time for reading for little readers. Those that have read and loved those stories will enjoy it as well.
This book decides to uses these characters and storylines to create a new and innovative story. The story is told in letters, from the individual characters themselves. Like little red riding hood to Goldilocks, or Hetty to Little Red Hen. Which isn’t something I see very often in children’s story.
I will say that this book could be a bit long for younger readers or readers with short attention spans. As the letters can be a long paragraph or sometimes three long. But if your little one can handle that it is a super cute story.
Carmela Full of Wishes
by
When Carmela wakes up on her birthday, her wish has already come true--she's finally old enough to join her big brother as he does the family errands. Together, they travel through their neighborhood, past the crowded bus stop, the fenced-off repair shop, and the panaderia, until they arrive at the Laundromat, where Carmela finds a lone dandelion growing in the pavement. But before she can blow its white fluff away, her brother tells her she has to make a wish. If only she can think of just the right wish to make . . .
MY THOUGHTS ON THE BOOK:
This was a super sweet story that my little nanny girl loved. It was a beautiful story with some good ideas and morals inside. It had the most lovely illustrations, but it wasn’t super deep. I had heard so many good things about this book before publications, so I had gone in with some level of expectation, and it just didn’t meet my expectations.
These books subject that is so important given the current political climate. It explores the experience of Latino immigrants. Ones that are separated by circumstance from their families. It also examines the longing that lingers within their hearts to be together, and the grief that being apart can create. It is a great start to have a conversation with your child about immigration.
Hoorade Day!
by
It is the Fourth of July, and a young girl and her parents are off to the town's big parade—Hoorade Day! Boosted up on Daddy's shoulders, the girl excitedly waves to her family members in the parade and joyfully describes each section. From the bleats and bangs of the marching band to the graceful twirls of the ribbon dancers, the little girl spots it all, reciting simply, rhyming cheers that complement the bright illustrations of the diverse community on each page.
MY THOUGHTS ON THE BOOK:
This book was just too fun! I am so excited to have gotten a chance to read this one. I love the 4th of July and haven’t read too many picture books about the 4th of July. This one was beautiful and extremely fun. I do love reading about celebration and the excitement just jumps off the colorful pages. This book is about a fun parade during the 4th of July.
The small main character is going to see a parade with her parents. The parade was so big and grand and she thought it was lovely. Her big brother is playing in the band, she spots all sorts of cars, floats, and dancers. Everything is blue, red, and white. The parade goes on forever. My little nanny girl loved all the bright colors and how long the parade is focused on.
The ending was super adorable and made me smile. The little girl sure had the best day of her little life. I enjoyed seeing a book focus on a child being so happy. Even my nanny girl expressed how happy the girl was. ( she is obsessed with naming emotions at the moment).
The art in this book is just gorgeous and well done. Everything is colorful and cartoonish. The perfect mix for a proper kids books.
All in all, this is one book I would recommend to parents everywhere, even if you don’t live in the United States it would be great for your kid to learn about other holidays. This would also be a great book to prepare kids for parades that they may go to.
