Spotted Her First Blitz

Publication date: June 26th 2018
Genres: Adult, Paranormal, Romance
Three hot leopard shifters? Yes please.
Piper is a librarian at Sacramento State working on her graduate thesis, but her quiet life turns upside down when three hot guys literally crash into her world. They move into her house and her life, telling her she’s wanted by a demon and a witch for her pharaoh’s blood. She just didn’t realize how much they would take over her life in the name of protecting her.
Piper is overwhelmed by the paranormal world and everything in it, including the fact that somehow all three of these guys are her mates. She has two weeks to find a way out of a demon contract and figure out how she’s going to deal with all three of these domineering shifters in her life and in her apartment. Will Piper be able to save herself and the pride she’s grown attached to before it’s too late?

Suddenly there was air again and she could breathe. “What the hell?” Piper never cursed. Ever. Her dad had always been strict about it.
“I’m sorry about that,” the security guard said with a wince. “I always forget about the air thing.”
Piper turned around to glare at him, but was so surprised she blinked and froze in place instead. The security guard was no longer a security guard. His face was still just as inhumanly gorgeous as before, but he wore a grey suit that was impeccably tailored and probably cost more than her car instead of the uniform she’d seen him in.
“I’m Eisheth,” he told her, eyeing her from head to toe.
It made Piper feel a bit self-conscious. She looked down at her comfortable flats and the flowy skirt that went down to her knees. Her belt accentuated her small waist and the button down shirt was crisp and white. She’d rolled up the sleeves to her elbows, but otherwise she wore what she normally wore. It was professional, comfortable, and practical.
“Well, what exactly did you just do to me?” she demanded, checking his arm for blood, but there was nothing. It was as though she’d never bitten him down to the bone from what she could tell.
The shock of their new location and too many strange things not adding up had her confused and not quite sure how to respond. She’d been ready to lose it and now she was just…numb. Was this even real? Suddenly she felt dizzy. Piper sat in the nearest chair and then realized she was in some kind of penthouse. She leaped up and looked around at the posh space.
“Please explain,” Piper gritted out, turning back to Eisheth.
He grimaced and Piper crossed her arms over her chest.
“You have to understand. I was summoned. There’s nothing I can do about it once I’m called. I’m under contractual obligation by the universe. If someone knows my full name they can summon me for a favor.”
“Summon?” she asked faintly, dropping into the chair again.
Why was he talking like something out of Buffy?
“Yeah, can I get you something to drink?” he asked, tugging at his sleeves until they were just so.
“Something with alcohol,” she said meekly.
Too many strange things. It was all starting to add up, but not in a way she could wrap her head around.
Eisheth poured her something with a smell that made her eyes water and handed it to her. Piper drank it down without question. She knew she needed it no matter how much it made her cough. “How can you be summoned?”
Eisheth studied her over the rim of his glass. “I’m a demon, sweetie.”
“Right, of course.”
“I’m pretty sure that bastard Forneus has been giving out my name like party favors. That’s the last time I play poker with him.” Eisheth glared at nothing in particular, but Piper couldn’t look away from him.
He was charming and handsome in the way that most clean cut men were. His hair was a gentle brown with tons of little tiny curls. His skin was nice and tanned, but it was his sharp jaw and dark brown eyes that made him attractive. Even though he was physically beautiful with muscles even the suit couldn’t hide, he made her nervous. Nope, not just nervous. This guy freaked her out.
He was a demon.

A flippin’ demon.

Author interview:

#1 – Do You See Writing as a Career?
It is very difficult to make a living writing fiction in the U.S., especially given the cost of health insurance. So I have no plans to give up my day job (voluntarily anyway). On the other hand, I do a lot of writing in my day job - it’s non-fiction, but it’s still writing.

#2 – What was the Hardest Part of Your Writing Process?
Good writing requires multiple revisions, which can get tedious after a while. But really, reaching readers is harder than any part of the writing process. There are so many books published or self-published each year, it’s hard to be heard above the noise.

#3 – Did you have any One Person Who Helped You Out with Your Writing Outside of Your Family?
Many people have helped me. I credit them in the front pages. I have to give a special shout out to the Baltimore Science Fiction Society, which has a critique group of extremely talented writers.

#4 – What is next for your writing?
The second book of the BetterWorld trilogy, The Wrath of Leviathan, will be released Sep. 1. The third book is set to follow in 2019. I also have an alternate history novel, Born in Salt, that I am seeking an agent for, and am working on other projects.

#5 – Do you have an addiction to reading as well as writing? If so, what are you currently reading?
To be a good writer, you have to be an avid reader. I just finished The Windup Girl by Paolo Bacigalupi (an amazing book), and am currently reading Mystical Greenwood by Andrew McDowell.

EXCERPT:
The rain stopped, and the wind outside had settled, leaving an uncomfortable silence in its wake. I didn’t have a problem with the quiet. I liked it, in fact. But this was something a little different. This was uncomfortable. The kind of stillness that came from forced proximity to someone or something that made your skin itch and your stomach roil. The kind of hush that usually set in right before a devastating storm or a natural disaster.
He did this sometimes. Just sat across from me and stared. He usually wouldn’t even say anything. I didn’t think he expected me to say anything, either. He just looked. Sometimes it lasted a few minutes, just long enough to send that chill skittering up and down my spine. Other times it would go on for hours. He’d blink and breathe and fidget, but his eyes…those remained locked on me, his unhealthy mix of sadness and lust and greed and anger crushing me to the point of breathlessness.
We were at it again, and I was just about out of patience. It was one thing to have been ripped away from my home, from my life, by that madwoman, Cora Anderson. It was another to have her poke and prod and use me as a science experiment. She’d altered my mind. Made me forget most of my life before the day I woke up a prisoner on the floor of her cold, dank cell. Those things were all bad, but having been “rescued” by this bastard and forced to stay by his side at all times? That was an entirely new level of torture.
“You’re thinking about him again, aren’t you?” His tone was acidic and his jaw tight. He had a temper, this guy. I’d seen it multiple times. He’d never done anything more than scream at me, but it was only a matter of time with people like this. I wasn’t sure how I knew that, but I felt it in my bones. Maybe I’d known someone like him at home. Maybe it was just intuition.
“Yes,” was all I replied. I found that simple, one-word responses went over the best. Or, more accurately, the worst. When I said too little, he grew agitated. He wanted me to talk to him, yet the things that came out of my mouth weren’t ever what he wanted to hear. I didn’t act like he’d hoped I would, didn’t say the things he longed to hear. Some days he was determined to change me. Others, he was rabid, blaming me for not behaving like myself and demanding that I wake up.
Forget that I had no idea who I was.
“While it’s not okay, I understand.” He offered me a smile—a small, tentative twitch of his lips and gentle shrug of his shoulders. He was making an effort to be kinder today, going out of his way to speak softer and move slower.
That made me even angrier.
“You understand? Then my life is complete. All I’ve ever wanted was the understanding of a serial killer.” Even if I hadn’t been thinking about…someone else, I would have lied. The fact that I wasn’t focused on him, and him alone, drove Dylan—my savior, my captor—crazy. But the truth was, I was thinking of him. That other him. How could I not? Even if I didn’t find myself missing him every moment of every day in an almost physical way, I wouldn’t be able to put him out of my mind because he was technically sitting here across from me.

Book Review: Grandad Mandela

                                                                                   BOOK INFORMATION:

Two great-grandchildren ask their grandmother 15 questions about the man they remember as Grandad, and the world remembers as Nelson Mandela, the global icon of peace and forgiveness who spent 27 years in prison.

They learn that he was a freedom fighter who put down his weapons for the sake of peace, and who then became the President of South Africa and a Nobel Peace Prize-winner, and realise that they can continue his legacy in the world today.

Seen through a child’s perspective, and authored jointly by his great-grandchildren and daughter, this amazing story is told as never before to celebrate what would have been Nelson's Mandela 100th birthday.

                                                                        MY THOUGHTS ON THE BOOK

Grandad Mandela was a sweet storybook for kids. It follows the life of the great Nelson Mandela. The daughter of Mandela is telling her children all the stories that she can remember of her father. She is also answering their many questions. I loved the question and answer format because you rarely see it in children's literature. The author somehow managed to add a lot of detail and story into a few pages. Also did it super flawlessly.

This is a brilliant way to introduce tough topics to children. Difficult topics like racism are displayed in an easy to understand format in this book. I imagine it would perfect for slightly older children due to the word choices.

The art is absolutely breathtaking. The illustrations on every page are super gorgeous. It invokes so much emotion and feeling. I think it also fits the culture of the story perfectly.

Book Blitz: Go Home. Afton

Go Home, Afton
Brent Jones
(Afton Morrison, #1)
Publication date: June 25th 2018
Genres: Adult, Thriller
We all wear masks, and Afton Morrison is no exception.
A small-town librarian with a dark side, Afton, twenty-six, has suppressed violent impulses her entire adult life. Impulses that demand she commit murder.
Blending her urges with reason, Afton stalks a known sexual predator, intending to kill him. But her plan, inspired by true crime and hatched with meticulous care, is interrupted by a mysterious figure from her past. A dangerous man that lurks in the shadows, watching, threatening to turn the huntress into the hunted.
Go Home, Afton is the first of four parts in a new serial thriller by author Brent Jones. Packed with grit and action, The Afton Morrison Series delves into a world of moral ambiguity, delivering audiences an unlikely heroine in the form of a disturbed vigilante murderess.
EXCERPT:
Parents—stay-at-home moms, mostly—brought in their toddlers once a week so I could read them a story. And I use the word toddlers loosely. Kids as old as six or seven sometimes attended during the summer. And the stories we would read were made up of fewer than fifty words, for the most part. A lot of the mothers in Wakefield were too lazy to read to their own children, I guess.
Oh, and crafts, too. After reading a story together, we’d break out glitter and colored pencils and paste and other nonsense, but that wasn’t the real reason a dozen women turned out with their little monsters each week. Storytime was an excuse for the mothers to gather and gossip. It always took a little while to get the children to settle down, sure. I’d press my finger to my lips and wait. Five or ten seconds at most, although I would have been happy to wait longer. Their mothers, on the other hand, were so much worse. Getting them to shut their fucking traps was a whole separate exercise in endurance.
But as much as I disliked children, there was something magical about them. It was their inability to see gray, I think. Their entire worlds existed in black and white, right and wrong, good and evil. You could see it in their faces as a story unfolded, rife with nervous energy at every inconsequential turn.
“And she just doesn’t know”—I read to the room, pointing to each gigantic word—“should she stay, should she go?”
I caught a boy’s expression, who sat just inches from me. The hippopotamus in our story was faced with a dilemma, and this boy was transfixed. His eyes were wide, his hands were cupped over his mouth, and he was vibrating with anticipation to see what the hippo would do next.
I flipped to the last page. “But yes the hippopotamus.”
The boy relaxed a little, making a deliberate show of letting his shoulders drop. A talented drama queen in the making. He was new to storytime and looked to be about five or six years old. He had dark hair, a tan complexion, and a missing front tooth. He’d attended just once before and he’d sat close that day, as well. I’d never really been big on learning children’s names, to be honest, but I knew his was Neil only because he’d come to the library alone both times. It sounds strange, I’m sure, but having a parent use the library as a free babysitting service happens more often than most people would guess.
I continued on, reading the final words of the story. “But not the armadillo.”
Neil was stressed all over again, and his tiny hand shot up. “Miss Afton?”
“Yes, ah, Neil? What is it, little man?”
“How come not the arma-darma?”
“Armadillo.” A woman in baggy gray sweatpants corrected him from the back of the room. She was a few years older than me, had bleach-blonde hair in a ponytail, and her voice resembled a seagull getting crushed by a car.
I shut the book and set it on my lap. “That’s a good question, Neil.” I bit my lower lip, deciding how much to share. “Well, let’s see. Ah, no one likes armadillos, for starters. They’re bullet-proof, if you can believe it, and ugly as sin. They carry leprosy, too, but they don’t bite children too often.”
The woman at the back of the room—Sweatpants, let’s call her—looked horrified. Her stained teeth chattered and she blinked in rapid succession. She placed her palms over her daughter’s ears, a girl around three or four in age.
Neil scratched his head. “What’s a lepra-she?”
“It’s—”
Sweatpants raised her hand to silence me—not that I minded—and looked to a few of the other mothers in the room for support, most of whom were checked out or occupied with their phones. She looked back at me again, then at her daughter. “It’s when good little boys and girls get ice cream.” That wasn’t how I might have defined the word, however. “You want to stop for ice cream on the way home, Jessi?”
It was hard enough getting these little turds to sit still for all fourteen pages of But Not the Hippopotamus. Why on earth would this woman want to stuff her daughter’s face with sugar before lunch? But the girl jumped up and squealed at the mention of sweets, and soon, other kids joined in, as did their mothers.
I peeked down at Neil to see him cradling his head in his hands, masking a look of disappointment by staring at the floor. It appeared he had forgotten all about armadillos and leprosy and storytime, and now sulked, wishing he had a parent present to take him for ice cream like the other children.
The mothers talked amongst themselves, and their toddlers fed on the elevated energy levels. The room was alive with discourse, and I wondered if the local Dairy Queen might consider paying me a small commission. “Well, that’s it for storytime, boys and girls. Thanks for coming.”
Sweatpants spoke up at the back of the room, the self-elected leader of Wakefield’s fattest and frumpiest. “But it’s only quarter past, Afton. Isn’t storytime supposed to be a full hour?”
“Just figured you were all on your way to get a double-scoop of leprosy.”
“Very funny.”
I raised my hands in a gesture of mock uncertainty. “We’ve got crafts we can do.” I pointed to three short tables covered in plastic, adorned with supplies that Kim had set up for us. “Should we get to it?”
“That won’t take long. Couldn’t you read them another story first?”
Couldn’t I read them another story? It’d been her idea to squeeze out one of these little nightmares. Why was I being punished for it? “Not this week, I’m afraid. Sorry.”
But she just wouldn’t give up. “Afton, do you know where Jessi’s daddy is right now?”
My first thought was that her husband was probably fucking her sister at some roadside motel with hourly rates, bed bugs, and a one-star rating on Trip Advisor. I couldn’t say that out loud, of course, and so I fought like hell to keep a smirk off my face. It helped to keep my sights trained on Jessi, who had sat back down, cross-legged in a checkered dress. She was drawing on the floor with one small finger.
Sweatpants answered her own question. “He’s at work, Afton. And he works hard, by the way, and we pay more than our share of taxes in this town. Taxes that pay your salary.”
Oh, the salary card. How I loved it when disgruntled parents brought up my salary, as if any one of them wanted to trade places with me. Yes, her taxes paid me a small fortune. That’s why I rented a one-bedroom apartment in a triplex. And it’s the same reason I drove a seven-year-old Corolla. I was so grateful—indebted, even—to Sweatpants and her husband that I just couldn’t wait to read another story.
“Sure thing.” I grabbed a second book off the pile next to me. “One more story, coming right up.”
Sweatpants smiled. It was a flat, fake smile, of course, the kind where the mouth curls tight but the eyes are dormant. It was about the best I could have hoped for, and it seemed to have a calming effect on the other mothers. They quieted down, eager to return to their various text message conversations.
I pointed my finger to more jumbo text on a colorful page. A story about an overweight and diabetic caterpillar with impulse control issues, who was always so very very fucking hungry. “In the light of the moon, a little egg lay on a leaf . . .”
And I couldn’t help but lose myself in thought. I was that little egg on a leaf, glimmering in the moonlight, and about to hatch. Soon after, the morning would come. And my hunger would be satiated at last, because Kenneth Pritchard would be dead.

When did you first realize you wanted to be a writer?

In late 2010/ start of 2011.  A couple of months after I had my first child.  I remember driving in the car and it popped into my head – I want to write a book, I day dream ALL the time, and I wanted to write them down and work them into a story.  It was almost two year later, when I had kid no2 that I realised I had the story of Audrey and Michael (from book one, A Time For Everything) in my head.  I rushed off to write it all down, then I had 10k words and didn’t know what to do with it!

How long does it take you to write a book?

The first book was the longest, because my kids were two-and-a-half and six-months-old when I started, and I also worked around 30hrs a week in the evenings, so time constraints was a big thing. I also had to teach myself how to write.  I read every book I could get out the library on how to write a novel.  I went through a whole load of books on amazon and wrote an awful first draft.  I joined a writer’s workshop and painfully spent forever re-writing.  As the kids got older, things got a little easier, and in the end, when I figured more and more out (even things about using a word document that I didn’t know ha!) it got a little quicker.  But from start, to publish of book one, was about four years.  I’d say a year of that was learning how to write, and how to publish.
The second book was released almost a year to the day later!  It was quicker as I had a lot of things on Stella already written. Again, the last six months is in editing and last minute changes and publsihing, so I don’t know, does that count?
The rate I’m going, I’m hoping that Saving Dystopia (my brand new project) will be in the year or less mark too!  I’d love to say quicker, but honestly, I never think what I’ve written is good enough, and I need loads of time and editing to make sure that what I publish is as good as it can be.  I wish I could write shorter books, and get them out there in the two to three month mark like so many kindle series, but I just don’t think that’s working for me right now.  Perhaps after book 3, when I have more experience, I’ll get quicker – and you know, if I win the lotto, I can give up my job and write full time!

Where did the idea for The Same Time come from? What was the inspiration?

Oh this is a great question ’cause I never intended to write about these two characters, or throw the things at them that I did. When I was learning how to write in book one, I read some advice – think about what your characters would never do, and go make them do it. Well for the main characters in book one (Audrey and Michael) I couldn’t think of anything that wasn’t already in play but Stella just spoke to me.  There was a major event in her own life, that she was the cause of, and ultimately had a huge impact on her relationship – even through the whole of book one, I, (the writer!) still had no clear idea why she did it. It really niggled at me, and I wanted to explore her more – ’cause I love her!  Stella, I think is the favourite character I’ve ever written.  She was a young single mother, and she was coping with so many hits in life, but still managed to make the career she needed and pull her whole family out of trouble.   And after I think a couple of weeks of looking at it, the answer hit me!  I knew exactly why she did it – it was like someone whispered in my ear what happened and then I realised there was a whole other story that needed to be told.  I wanted to look at people and their perceptions of life and the universe.  I don’t think we mean to, but people in general put themselves at the centre of their own lives (and that’s not a bad thing).  We just look at what happens to us and our immediate family, sometimes we can forget that major things can be happening in people’s lives around us.  Especially if those other people are hiding it well.  We can think that we are the only ones going through something major (like Michael was in A Time For Everything) that if we forget to stop and check, our best friends can be going through something of their own struggles. Sometimes people look like they have their shit together, but if you scratch the surface, they’re scrambling like everyone else. Hence the title The Same Time, I wanted to show what was happening to Stella and David at the same time we were all focused on Michael and Audrey in book one.

Describe The Same Time using seven words.

I’m going to cheat – and give you seven with some descriptions!

Though provoking – what really is destiny?
Time travel – what can you really influence?
Romance – hot guy meets hot girl, and things eventually get steamy
Heart breaking – ‘cause sometimes life gets in the way
Overcoming sterotypes – Stella is a young single mother (in the late 90s) and works her ass off to work her way up her career ladder.
Friendship – David and Michael.  David and Stella.  Stella and Michael. They all look out for each other.
Awareness – How much do you really know about your best friend lives?

What do you hope readers get from your book?

Entertainment!  I hope the read it, and fall in love, and get taken on an adventure.  Someone left a review along the lines that they got schooled about thoughts becoming reality and I loved that!  If you think negative about something, it will be a negative thing in your own perception of things, and that will be your own interpretation of reality.  And you can change that!  Always look for the silver lining (if the situation calls for it) and bring the positive from it, then things will be a little more positive in your own perception of things!  It makes for a much happier life!

What was your favorite part when writing The Same Time?

I was cooking the kid’s dinner one evening, and bam, this realisation about a certain plot development popped into me head.  It was a major thing in book one, and it was never suppose to connect to the characters of book 2 the way it did – but it made so much more sense that they were all involved and that was pretty cool.  There was a situation that the characters in book one had no idea they were connected to, and again, I never realised it until halfway through writing book two, and I was pretty happy that it would make so much sense.  It actually made the overall theme of the book that little better, even though I never wanted the thing to happen, I actually gasps when I realised what I was going to have to write, but it really did work!

Genres: Adult, Contemporary, LGBTQ+, Romance
They call me the Charmer. My best friend Wade tells me it’s because I’m suave and mysterious. But he doesn’t know my secret. The one I’ve kept hidden from him for twelve years. The one I will never reveal to him — Rhys
They call me The Brute. Probably because of my physique. And, let’s face it, because I’m a total dick at times. So Rhys likes to tell me anyway. Thing is, there’s something Rhys isn’t telling me. Something I’m dying to hear from his lips. His sinful confession. You see, I know Rhys’s secret — Wade
Rhys Damon has spent most of his adult life watching Wade Tucker bed woman after woman, his dark desire for his best friend and business partner a secret he is determined to take to his grave, since he knows it will never be reciprocated. With their design firm thriving across two continents, Rhys finds himself content burying his heartache in a string of meaningless, casual sex arrangements. Until the night everything changes.
When Wade Tucker stumbles upon his best friend calling out his name as he pleasures himself, he knows his relationship with Rhys will never be the same again. A year later, the memory of what Wade saw is still branded in his mind and his feelings for Rhys have evolved into something he never anticipated. As tension mounts and the relationship between the two business partners becomes increasingly strained, things finally come to a head the night Wade follows Rhys and discovers him with another man.
After an explosive confrontation, Wade makes Rhys a proposition he can’t refuse: that they try things out for six weeks. Six weeks of exploring a side of each other they never knew before. Six weeks of torrid kisses and sultry touches. Six weeks of screamingly good, scorching hot sex. Six weeks of utterly losing themselves to one another.
But as the end of their proposition looms in sight, can Wade persuade Rhys that he wants more? Or will Rhys’s deep-seated fears stop him from fully surrendering his heart and soul to the one man he thought he could never have?
Discover Rhys and Wade’s wickedly intoxicating story in this sixth novella in the hot, contemporary romance series Nights by A.M. Salinger. Note from the author: although each book in Nights can be read as a standalone, you will enjoy this series even more if you read the books in order!
This is a novella length MM romance with a HEA.
EXCERPT:
A muscle jumped in Rhys Damon’s jaw as he strode across the open plan workspace of the Tokyo branch of Damon & Tucker. He ignored the curious looks of the men and women seated at the neat, uncluttered cubicles lining the ebony floor and stormed inside a large, glass-lined office. He slammed the door shut and glared at the figure on the other side of the sleek desk dominating the stark masculine room while he flicked a switch. The outside world disappeared as the privacy glass changed from clear to frosted.
“Why did you take Misaki off the Osaka project?” Rhys snapped.
Wade Tucker placed his pen down on the file he was working on and leaned back in his leather chair. His expression grew shuttered as he locked gaze with Rhys, his slate blue eyes unreadable.
“She’s not fit for it right now.”
Rhys inhaled shallowly and counted to five.
Breathe. Just breathe. Don’t let him get to you.
“Would you care to explain?” Rhys said between gritted teeth. “We agreed months ago that it was time to give her the lead on one of the new contracts and we did so. We’re now six weeks from the deadline. The timing of this couldn’t be any worse.”
Wade drummed his fingers on the white laminate table, a slight frown darkening his chiseled face. Rhys found his eyes drawn to Wade’s large hand and immaculately clipped nails. He wondered if Wade had touched anyone with that very hand the night before. Had dipped his fingers inside a woman’s hot mouth and her wet pussy. Had gripped her ass and her hips while he thrust his hard dick repeatedly into her body.
Rhys reigned in on the torrid images flashing across his inner vision and cursed internally.
Now is not the time to indulge in your usual fuck fantasies about this dipshit.
Rhys thinned his lips, leaned against the door, and folded his arms across his chest. “I’m still waiting, Wade.”
Wade let out a rueful sigh and ran a hand through his hair. “She’s made several mistakes in the past two weeks that would have jeopardized the entire project had one of the other designers on her team not picked up on them.”
Surprise jolted through Rhys at Wade’s words. It was followed by a surge of irritation. “Why the hell didn’t you tell me about this sooner? That doesn’t sound like the kind of thing she’d—”
“Because I only managed to pin her down and talk to her last night,” Wade said, his own voice laced with annoyance.
Rhys stilled, his mouth suddenly dry. “Wait…please tell me you didn’t sleep with her!”
Shock flared across Wade’s face. He scowled and jumped to his feet, his hands flat on the desk.
“What?! No! What the hell do you take me for?” he barked.
“An asshole who likes to dip his stick in any wet hole he can find,” Rhys said bluntly.
Wade blinked owlishly, his expression so disconcerted Rhys would have laughed had the candid statement he had just made not burned through his very core.
He’d watched Wade bed woman after woman in the sixteen years they had known each other, and it still hurt just as badly as the day he realized he wanted the man who ended up becoming his closest friend and business partner.
Fate is a sick, twisted bitch.
“You’re such a fucking contradiction,” Wade muttered.
Rhys stiffened under Wade’s heated stare. “What do you mean?”
Wade’s eyes darkened with a mixture of frustration and amusement.
“You’ve got that whole suave, sophisticated, butter-wouldn’t-melt-in-your-mouth look down to a T,” he said, his laser-like blue gaze roaming Rhys from his carefully-styled, dark blonde hair to the polished caps of his Italian loafers, “yet you’ve got the filthiest mouth of anyone I’ve ever met.”
Rhys ignored the fire licking across his skin where Wade had literally kissed his body with those dangerously mesmerizing eyes of his. He unfolded his arms, pushed away from the door, and tucked his hands in the pockets of his tailor-made trousers as he strolled casually across the office. He stopped opposite Wade and faced him across the desk.
“Of course.” Rhys arched an eyebrow arrogantly. “After all, that’s why they call me The Charmer and you The Brute.”
Wade’s lips twitched at the nicknames that had plagued them since their college days. “I still maintain they should have named us The Joker and The King.”
Rhys’s shoulders relaxed, the tension that had been with him since that morning slowly abating. “With me in the role of king, obviously,” he said tartly.
Wade chuckled, his mouth curving in a lopsided grin that brought out his dimples. Rhys swallowed a groan when he felt his dick stir in response.
Sexy fucker.
Wade’s expression gradually sobered. “Misaki’s pregnant. And she’s thinking about having a termination,” he said quietly.
Rhys inhaled sharply, surprise tightening his muscles once more.
Wade sighed. “And no, before you ask, it isn’t mine.”
Rhys’s heart thudded in his chest as he considered Wade. “Who’s the father?” he mumbled.
Wade rolled his eyes. “You get one guess.”
Rhys’s mind raced frantically as he thought of their staff and anyone Misaki had shown interest in of late. From Wade’s words, it had to be somebody they both knew.
“Not Reo?” Rhys said. “I know she had a thing for him a while back but he just got engaged, didn’t—”
“For one of the smartest guys I know, you sure are dumb sometimes,” Wade interrupted, deadpan. “It’s Itsuki.”
Rhys ignored the insult and frowned. “We haven’t got an Its—” He froze as a face swam before his eyes. “Oh my fucking God, you mean that Itsuki?!”
Wade nodded, his eyes sparkling with mirth at Rhys’s stunned expression.
“The sandwich guy?!” Rhys spluttered. “That baby-faced kid who looks like he hasn’t hit puberty yet? The one who delivers our lunch every day?!”
“Shush, keep your voice down!” Wade said with a frown, eyes darting to the frosted glass separating them from the outer office.
“We both know it’s soundproof,” Rhys said absent-mindedly. He crossed his arms and leaned his hip against Wade’s desk, still startled by Wade’s revelation. “Is she serious? About the termination?” he said after a while, chewing his lower lip thoughtfully.
They both knew Misaki was deeply committed to her career at Damon & Tucker. She had been with their Tokyo branch ever since its inception four years ago.
Wade’s gaze dropped fleetingly to Rhys’s mouth. He sat down slowly.
“I’ve told her to take some time out and think about it.” He picked up his pen and rolled it between his fingers. “Her head is all over the place right now and, until she makes her decision and comes to terms with it, she won’t be able to concentrate fully on work.”
“Good move,” Rhys murmured. He was still annoyed Wade had kept what had happened from him, but he was also pleased Wade had chosen to address things personally with Misaki first, before hauling her over the coals about her mistakes in front of the entire office. It was one of the reasons they had built such a successful business together and had fiercely loyal employees who rarely jumped ship.
“So, who are you thinking of giving the lead on the project to?” Rhys said curiously.
The pen stilled in Wade’s hand. The strangest look flashed in his eyes as he gazed at Rhys.
“I thought you and I could take this one on together.” A faint smile curved his sculptured lips. “Like the good old days.”
Rhys’s stomach plummeted as he stared back at Wade. The last thing he wanted to do with Wade was get back to their “good old days”. In fact, he couldn’t think of anything worse.
Rhys knew there was no way he could be that close to Wade again without doing something stupid. Like kiss him. Or jump his bones.
“It’ll please our client. And with the both of us working on it, it won’t impact too much on our schedule,” Wade continued in a wary tone, as if he were testing the waters.
“What about Gabe?” Rhys said, conscious he was grinding his teeth. He took a breath and deliberately relaxed his jaw.
“He’s got his plate full with the Hawaii project.” Wade grimaced. “Besides, I can practically see heart-shaped bubbles above his head whenever I look at him these days. If he wasn’t a guy, I’d swear he was pregnant, too. He’s positively glowing.”
Gabe Anderson, one of their senior and most sought after design consultants, had recently gotten engaged to his boyfriend. Their relationship hadn’t been without its trials though, and it was a testament to the two men’s commitment to one another that they had come this far in such a short time.
“Well, if anyone could impregnate a guy, I’d say it was Cam Sorvino,” Rhys murmured as he thought of the gray-eyed king Gabe had tamed. He smiled faintly when another man’s face swam before his eyes, one he knew could also lay claim to that improbable scenario. “Or Joe Cavendish. And you, of course.”
Wade startled.
Rhys suppressed a bitter smile at his business partner’s expression.
“Don’t worry,” he drawled in the nonchalant tone he had mastered over the years of his friendship with Wade, “I know you have zero interest in sticking your dick in a man’s ass.” He pushed away from the desk and started for the door.
“Who’s Joe Cavendish?” Wade said.
Surprise flashed through Rhys at Wade’s tone. He paused and looked over his shoulder. “A friend.”
Lines wrinkled Wade’s brow. “You should introduce me, one day.”
Rhys blinked. If I didn’t know any better, I’d say that was a hint of jealousy in his voice. He scoffed at himself internally then. Yeah, like that would ever happen.
“I don’t think so,” Rhys said smoothly.
Wade’s frown deepened.
And there it is.
